(November 1, 2006) The Only Solution to CoB’s Corruption: Committee of the Whole "The CoB’s evaluation and raise systems are broken. This fact cannot be denied by any reasonable person. Currently, the CoB lists 70 full-time faculty members on its website. After recent administrative deceit, only 6 of those 70 should participate in the CoB’s 2006 annual evaluation and/or raise process (although an additional 5 or 6 (or more) may be “invited” by Harold Doty). Just who are the faculty slated to be participants in the meeting? Let’s play Meet the Participants. ..".
(November 2, 2006) The Curious Case of the Missing Economics Line Or, Anatomy of An Administrative Deal "It starts, of all places, at USMGC. In May 2006, newly promoted Associate Professor of Economics David Sharpe resigns from USM to take an industry job. This is a crippling blow to the economics fiefdom carefully constructed over fifty years by the likes of Joseph Greene, Ty Black, George Carter, Charles Sawyer, and Farhang Niroomand. Having just lost Assistant Professors Sunny Wong and Melody Lo from the Hattiesburg faculty, Sharpe’s departure leaves economics short 3 members overall. Lo and Wong’s departures were expected, however, and Sawyer and Carter were able to make two hires – Akbar Marvasti and Sami Dakhlia – but were denied the opportunity to hire a replacement for Sharpe, even on a Visiting basis...".
(November 6, 2006) Coming Soon: Susan Doty’s Cover An Investigative Series on the use of the CoB’s Budget: "This installment in the Special Report series follows up on a tip provided to usmpride.com investigators concerning a job-opening advertisement placed by EFIB Chairman George Carter in the November 2006 issue of Job Openings for Economists. That ad is presented below, with highlights (of various shades) provided by our investigators: ...".
(December 13, 2006) 8-Dec-06 CoB Meeting News Bytes "... CoB Dean Harold Doty has completed work on the first 4 of the 5 AACSB Strategic Management Standards. Doty told the CoB that he is delaying completion of the 5th as a way to leverage more money from USM Provost Jay Grimes.
Commentary: Is AACSB important, or not? When Grimes hears he’s being used (again) by Doty in this way, it’ll be hard for him (Grimes) to believe itis important. And, he’ll (Grimes) be right in thinking so...".
(December 18, 2006) Lost In Translation? "One of the most enlightening contributions from the USM-No Quarter! Message Board (formerly known as the USM AAUP Message Board, formerly known as FireShelby.com) was the innovative series of translated documents authored by various USM administrators. Translation was achieved via a proprietary translation program known as WindTalkers. The authors of the WindTalkers program have generouslyagreed to use the newest version of their software to help us read between the lines of a recent memorandum sent by CoB dean Harold Doty to EFIB chair George Carter...".
(December 19, 2006) CoB 90210, part 2 "In Part 2 of this series, we take a look at a new monthly Pine Belt area magazine, Signature, available at retail outlets (no charge) throughout the Hattiesburg and Oak Grove areas. The magazine (see logo below) features pictorials of various social gatherings in the greater Hattiesburg Area...". See also, CoB 90210, part 1.
(January 9, 2006) Another Doty Scam Uncovered: Economics Hiring 2007 "Previous reports at www.usmpride.com uncovered the strong connections among Harold Doty, Susan Doty, the Mississippi Council on Economic Education (MCEE), the Bureau of Business and Economic Research at USM (BBER), and the Center for Economic Education at USM (CEE). To recap, Harold Doty is a board member of the MCEE andDean of the USM CoB, which oversees the BBER, which in turn oversees the CEE. Susan Doty is the “lead educator” for the MCEE, working primarily through the CEE at USM. Confused? Don’t be..."
(January 11, 2006) 31st & Pearl, part 48, Doty’s Legacy, and Gall "CoB Dean Harold Doty has gall. He has the gall to stand in front of CoB faculty, as he did in December of 2006, and critically remark that former CBA Dean Joseph Greene’s standard for raises was “who had the children last.” It takes gall to make such a statement when one’s own standard seems to be “who has the biggest mortgage” or “who has the most expensive lifestyle.” Doty’s CoB is far from a meritocracy. In fact, Greene’s college may have been more like a meritocracy than Doty’s, now that USM has ushered in the research focus that was not part of Greene’s world...".
(January 18, 2006) What Will Doty “SAIS” Now? "The CoB was told that Dr. Stan Lewis was hired for one year as Interim Director of SAIS (School of Accountancy and Information Systems). During that year, despite it being the same year as final preparation for and visitation by an AACSB re-accreditation team, Doty would initialize and Barry Babin, Chairman of Marketing and Management, would lead a nationwide search for the new SAIS Director. Does Dr. Babin have a vast knowledge of accounting? No. Information Systems? No. Great experience as a chairman? No. A lot of experience running searches? Not exactly."
(January 19, 2007) Praying to the Porcelain Gods “’Restroom closed.’ ‘Use Bathroom on 2nd Floor.’Such statements were hanging in the doorways of the restrooms in Greene Hall during the week of January 15, 2007. Why, you ask? Another brilliant stroke by Duane Harold Doty. AACSB is coming soon. Amidst the chaotic conclusion to the ill-fated HVAC project - which, by the way was only 5 months (an entire semester) behind the schedule that Doty and others sold to CoB faculty at the outset - Doty decided to undertake a few more ‘facelift’ items,…”.
(January 23, 2007) Trust ... and Doty "Billy Joel wrote and sang about it (A Matter of Trust, Joelsongs and Sony Music, BMI, 1986), many others have discussed it, and everyone has experienced trust and distrust, and now Management guru Stephen M. R. Covey covers it in his book The Speed of Trust – The One Thing That Changes Everything. This is frighteningly relevant to the CoB. Covey opines thatwhen trust is low, the speed of business is low and the cost is high, but when trust is high, the speed is high and the cost is low. Doesn’t that make sense? Not to Doty, except in the negative...".
(January 24, 2007) "Dean Cajoled?" Hasn't Doty ever Listened to Lindley? "In the recent 19 January 2007 Assurance of Learning seminar conducted by the CoB ‘s AACSB consultant Karen Tarnoff, CoB Dean Harold Doty remarked that the CoB would not be considered a mature organization until it got to the point where AACSBwork got done without have to be “Dean cajoled.” We feel we must remind Dean Doty of a few things: You came to USM, and virtually on day one you told each and every CoB faculty they were crap (remember all of your one-on-one, get-to-know-you interviews?) ...".
(January 24, 2007) "I've Yet to Make a Mistake at USM" "Harold Doty once – okay, often – uttered those words. He would seem as sincere as he is capable of when he would say it. Let’s assume he is sincere, and he still believes it. Are any of the following events a mistake?...".
(January 27, 2007) Dear Dr. Doty ... "...You and your fellow administrators made demonstrably poor decisions that led to the appeals and grievances and then you allowed them to accumulate over the years. You ignored the rules and evidence and reason. You have demonstrated that you should not participate in this matter at all. Given the extraordinary animosity you have displayed toward me and the malicious, punitive conduct directed at me, you should not participate in the resolution of the appeals and grievances in any way whatsoever. Had you taken initiative to correct the problems you created without being required to do so, you might have reason to participate in the process of resolving the appeals and grievances. For whatever reason, you do not have the leadership or impartiality to signal that you had overcome your bias. We don’t need to compound the problems you created with cause for further appeals and grievances. ..".
(January 30, 2007) The CoB's Cut-and-Paste Culture by Duane Cobb I don't know when it began, and it's probably been around for a while, but I’m almost certain that the CoB’s cut-and-paste culture has never been as ingrained as it is today. This website has been reporting on it for almost six months-long before the Dr. Cut-and-Paste column appeared here recently. Although that column referenced EFIB Chair George Carter's use of a job opening advertisement template, one created by another EFIB faculty, to prepare for a job search, CoB Dean Harold Doty is usually at the center of the cut-andpaste culture.
(January 30, 2007) Dean Chatterbox by Duane Cobb "’Elliott's eye was on the future. He would never stab you in the back or cut your throat -- he did so many things that document how outstanding, how truly fine a man he was.’" CoB Dean Harold Doty on the late CoAL Dean, Elliott Pood, The Hattiesburg American, 19 January 2007
(January 31, 2007) Dean Harold Doty's New Centralized Hiring Process Part I "This is part I in a two-part series that examines Dean Harold Doty's new centralized process for making faculty hires in USM's College of Business. Part I delves into the hiring process for a new Associate Professor and Director of the CoB's School of Accountancy and Information Systems (SAIS)."
(February 1, 2007) Dean Harold Doty's New Centralized Hiring Process Part II "This is part II in a two-part series that examines Dean Harold Doty's new centralized process for making faculty hires in USM's College of Business. Part II delves into the hiring process for a new Assistant Professor of Economics and Director of the CoB's new Center for Economics Education.)...".
(February 1, 2007) What will Suan Doty's Camouflage Cost the CoB? "Our investigators continue to examine details and events surrounding two of the CoB's centers --- The Center for Economics Education and the Bureau of Business and Economic Research. Readers will recall that both of these centers are housed in Joseph Greene Hall, though neither visibly retains any staff support. A number of other reports available here at usmpride.com indicate that William Gunther, the BBER's current Director, treats the BBER more like an entitlement than a privilege. A number of documents available here discuss what appears to be CoB Dean Harold Doty's desire to mask his spouse's, Susan Doty's, professional ties to the CoB through the hiring of a CEE Director. Through her position with the MCEE, Susan Doty reportedly currently serves as the CEE's lead economics educator. What her "official status" will be after a new CEE Director is hired remains unclear...".
(February 5, 2007) How Much Longer will Dean Doty Remain at the Helm of the CoB? An Investigative Series on 2006-07 USM Presidential Transition "In her 1 February 2007 article in The Hattiesburg American entitled "Faculty surprised by dean's resignation," HA Staff Writer Rachel Leifer states that the ". . . resignation of a top University of Southern Mississippi official last week is drawing criticism from some faculty inside the College of Education and Psychology and beyond." Leifer is writing about the 26 January 2007 resignation of Willie Pierce, Dean of USM's College of Education & Psychology. Pierce's "surprising" resignation came about one week after the death of USM's College of Arts & Letters Dean, Elliott Pood.
(February 9, 2007) The Susan Doty Camouflage Plan Hits a Snag, An Investigative Series on the use of the CoB's Budget "Our investigators continue to examine details and events surrounding two of the CoB's centers --- the Center for Economics Education and the Bureau of Business and Economic Research. Both of these centers are housed in Joseph Greene Hall, though neither visibly retains any staff support. Some of our documents discuss what appears to be CoB Dean Harold Doty's desire to mask his spouse's, Susan Doty's, professional ties to the CoB through the hiring of a CEE Director. A recent installment in the Special Report series entitled "What will Susan Doty's Camouflage . .?" covered the beginning of the CoB's search process for the new Director of the CEE. New information obtained by usmpride.com researchers suggests that process appears to be unraveling...".
(February 23, 2007) The CoB's Long Nightmare will Continue, At Least that's what the Silence on AACSB Says to Us "It's been about 2 and 1/2 weeks since the AACSB Peer Review Team left Hattiesburg, and there still is no official word from the CoB Dean's office about what they concluded/found. Of course, we do have the stories put out by Management/Marketing Chair Barry Babin and EFIB Chair George Carter suggesting that the Team found enough problems to warrant a 6th year/Continuing Review. That means a small cadre of AACSB representatives will be visiting the CoB, this time around February of 2008...".
(February 26, 2007) A Plagiarized Policy on Plagiarism? by Duane Cobb "The recent revelation that the CoB's Academic Integrity Policy was copied, the better part of word-for-word, from Syracuse University's Whitman School of Management is barely a surprise to many in the CoB. Since the beginning of 2006-07, USM's College of Business has been in a state of turmoil resulting from a number of ethics-challenged decisions made by the CoB's administration. Now, the recent prediction on this website -- that we may be on the eve of a national AACSB scandal -- appears to be coming to fruition.
(February 26, 2007) Is there any of us left there anywhere? A document as critical as the report to AACSB for re-accreditation had parts plagiarized from another school. All we know by way of explanation or defense are plaintive cries that “everyone does it” so it is “no problem”. Now we have the ultra-ironic and deeply sad next situation of the CoB’s Integrity Policy being lifted from former Doty employer, Syracuse. I guess everyone does that too.
(March 1, 2007) An Open Letter to Dean Doty "Dear Dean Doty, If you have something to say about usmpride.com and/or me, why don't you say it in writing to our readers? I believe the written word is more carefully considered and usually better reasoned than two people standing in the hallway calling each other “idiots”. (If you had any sense of humor we should have been laughing together over calling each other idiots, like a couple of kids. Of course, you called me an idiot first.)...".
